It had to be fate. Or irony. Destiny? Serendipity? There’s a new Wisher here. And her story is trimmed in unbelievable timing.
How many cats and kittens have I rescued from my mother-in-law’s home and the surrounding area? I’ve lost count. There were many years during which I would be summoned to the location to pick up a stray mom cat or scramble around trying to catch a litter of wild kittens. Luckily, the neighbor was a cat lover who fed the ferals who had to be spayed and released back to that area. Those were some great years. Lots of cats and kittens saved. Lots of litters prevented.
I’ve mentioned that my mother-in-law is now living in a nursing home. (We have her Sammi cat.) And recently, we heard that the neighbor is no longer living in her home. A couple of months ago, my mother-in-law’s home was put on schedule to be auctioned. Obviously, there were mixed emotions about that property no longer belonging to family. It’s the home my husband grew up in. And for me and my daughters, it’s also a source of so many cat rescue memories. When the date was set for the auction, I thought about how I would never rescue cats and kittens from that location again. Even the neighbor is gone now. There won’t be anyone looking out for homeless felines. Won’t be anybody there to feed. Sort of the end of an era there.
So the auction was set for November 16 (last Thursday). It was Husband’s day off from work. The auction time was 4:30pm and Husband planned to go out earlier in the day to make sure we were ready. The person who’d been staying in the house was there when Husband arrived. And here’s what she said: There’s been a kitten living around here. I’ve fed it some because it seemed hungry. With BJ (neighbor) gone, and me getting ready to leave here, I don’t know what will happen to it. What if the new owners are mean to it? And who will feed it til then?
Right after that I guess, this person called the shelter where my daughters work. Then Older Daughter called me. Oh boy – she said. I don’t think you’re going to believe this. On the last day in the world that we can be on that property, there’s a cat there. I just got a call about it. We cannot take it here. We’re completely maxed out. But I know you’re maxed out, too. I told her to try some other shelters, but I know they’re all full as well. I just sat there in deafening silence. The last thing I needed was another Wisher. I told Older that I’d see what Husband said when he got home. And then I continued to just sit there staring. What were the chances that on the last day ever that I would have anything to do with that house, that property, that area – on the last day, there would be a cat???
When Husband arrived at home, I asked all about it. Yeah I saw it – he said. It’s the color of Evers. There are a lot of people milling around and I doubt it will be there when we go back out. Besides, you don’t have any room here for it, right?
I explained to Husband that it must be fate. This would be the last little life I’d ever save from there. I would have to try. He said he couldn’t imagine that it would be there, and then he knew I’d make myself crazy worrying about it. I was busy getting a carrier. I’ll have to try.
When we got there, the auctioneer was already there. I looked EVERYWHERE for that cat. Stretching beyond my mother-in-law’s property are acres of fields. There’s a little woods line, too, of trees and thicket. I searched and called and searched and called. I even went across the road to the neighbor’s house and looked all around on her property. There is one more neighbor just on the other side of BJ’s house. I even went over there and knocked on the door, but no answer. Time was ticking and I was panicking. As cars started arriving with their bidding passengers, I finally told Husband I would have to give up. I left him with my carrier and sadly drove away.
I was not even halfway home when my phone rang. I picked up and luckily had enough signal to hear Husband say this – I have the cat. Found the next available turnaround spot and headed back. Our little Last Day cat had slipped INTO the house at some point and was sitting in one of the bedrooms when Husband found it. He got it into my carrier and hurriedly called me. I picked the little gal up and happily headed home.
She’s an older kitten, maybe six months old. She looks like a Russian Blue, but she has a lightly striped tail. She is sweet and loving and will make a great addition to someone’s family. She’s certainly young enough to adjust to just about anything. She is NOT feral. That’s where luck blessed ME. And for her . . . she’s the last of an era, an extremely lucky little girl. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me. It’s truly incredible that on the last day ever that I could save a cat from this area, here was Little Auction Annie, making sure this era went out with a bang.
She’ll be needing a home, Friends. Keep your fingers crossed. See you next week.
she is adorable....and a good reminder of days gone by. glad she is friendly.

Love that little face - Russian blue is somewhere in her genes. She is so lucky you found her. Now she has a chance at a forever home. She looks just like my Russian blues - Bat man and Dick Grayson. I have been treating a really bad infection on Grayson's back right leg and today I found he has tape worms. Back to the drawing board on Meds. Hopefully this little Annie will not have worms. The vet said they get them from eating flees or catching Rabbits and game. Bless you little wisher - you are loved

She is SO sweet, and oh, SO lucky! Chrystal, how is it that she isn't feral? Was she someone's kitten? Surely she's not tame just from people feeding her? Here's hoping and praying for a wonderful home for Little Auction Annie! Happy Thanksgiving Chrystal! It surely will be for Little Annie!

She's like the last passenger from a sunken ship, picked up in the last minute of the last search. She's safe on dry land now.
