Dora was very sick with high fever last week. Dr C didn’t know what exactly was wrong because there were no other symptoms. He said I might see upper respiratory illness break out, or possibly diarrhea and vomiting. It could be something treatable with an antibiotic or it might be viral. She received a fever-reducing injection at the clinic and I took one home to use the next day if the fever was still that high. My fear was that if she broke with an upper respiratory illness, she wouldn’t be able to taste or smell and that would cause her to stop eating. OR – she would end up with the kind of symptoms Violet had (vomiting and diarrhea) and that would cause her to stop eating. I knew that the most important thing would be for her to just keep eating (and to stay hydrated).
There were never any URI symptoms. There were no gastrointestinal symptoms. But when the second fever-reducing injection wore off on Thursday mid-morning, it wasn’t long before I had my diagnosis. Dora was limping. So it was Limping Calici Virus. I’ve had kittens here with this condition in the past. The fever is usually really high. There can be a variety of other symptoms, including serious mouth ulcers. My Jazzy cat had a severe case of Calici Virus when she was a tiny kitten. She had terrible mouth ulcers when she came to my house to be “fostered” (yeah, she was a failed foster). In fact, she lost part of her tongue to the severity of those ulcers, but she recovered and does fine now with that partial tongue.
I knew if Dora would keep eating, she had a chance of survival even though Calici can be a terrible illness. (You’ll remember that Violet stopped eating entirely and Older Daughter had to force-feed for days. Violet didn’t have Calici Virus. But what almost took her life was the not eating.) Little Dora never stopped eating. We had a really rough few days of it, but on Sunday evening Dora tried to play with a toy. I couldn’t help the trickle of hope I felt. I started believing she was going to recover and pull through.
Last night Dora seemed almost completely back to her old self. I know she is lonely up there in the other bathroom, away from her two friends. She’s finishing her antibiotic (which was precautionary since Calici is viral). Also – we vaccinated Jaws and Violet (even though they are so young and so tiny) and I want to give those vacs a couple of days to provide as much protection as possible. Soon Dora can move back in with her two tiny friends.
Thank you for the thoughts and prayers for this little Dora Dot. I’m thrilled that the two new baby Wishers have come through their illnesses and will continue to be with us. The next hope will be to get them adopted as kittens. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?!
See you tomorrow for some wildlife stories.
Yahoo!! So glad to hear good news about little Dora...been wondering.
Wishing you & the babies a healthy & worry free week.

That is good news indeed. What a minuscule little creature Dora is. Let's hope this is the toughest part of a long and joyful life.

Wonderful news! She is so sweet. I know she misses her friends as they miss her - glad they will be reunited. Lucky the family that adopts this baby (perhaps with one or both of her friends?)

So happy little Dora is much better - she is a real cutie. I had never heard of the virus she had. I am so glad some one knew what to do for her. Glad she can go back in with Violet and Jaws. A girl just wants to have fun. Furry fun is the best fun..

I'm glad she is on the mend.
I just got my royalty check for book sales and as promised, sent a donation ia PayPal for all of the weekend sales of my books that one weekend in July. It's not a lot (author's don't make big money on a 99 cent kindle) but I hope it provides some care. Abby the Lab's Mom
