Journey #1 - learning my new computer. Journey #2 - saving a precious kitty or two. Journey #3 - finding a way to send two Winnie's Wish kitties into the Good Life.
The computer guy came last night. The bad news is that I lost all of my programs. I was used to creating documents in Word Perfect. I did my single slides in Power Point. I had a picture editor that I LOVED - Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Apparently, even if I could find the disks or CD's of these (which I can't), they won't work on the new computer. I can't afford to go out and buy any of these things I used and loved – paying him to be here on top of the cost of this computer has shut us down for a while. He downloaded some free programs for me, and I will now try to learn how to use them. I am a little sad that some of my favorite programs are no more. But wait until you hear this . . . HE SAVED MY PICTURES from my old dead hard drive!!! I have hundreds and hundreds of pictures. There was an absolute possibility that I could have lost them all. BUT I HAVE THEM. This is truly a cause for celebration!
Now. I lost ALL of my email contacts. If you wouldn't mind – please send me a quick email (even just hello is fine). Then I can grab it and save you to my contacts.
Thank you Goldie for telling me to keep posting even without pictures. I appreciate that. I wasn't sure I could get pictures onto my blog at all. I can, but at this point, I can't edit any new pictures. So if a picture is not already "fixed" in my current picture files, it will be very poor quality on the blog. I tried Paint last night, but it just won't do what I need to do with my pictures. Probably the ONE additional investment I'd love to make at some point would be for my wonderful Office Picture Manager. But I looked at it online last night and apparently you have to buy ALL of Microsoft Office. You can't get just the picture manager. AND - the 2013 version no longer includes the picture manager. There was an offer available to download a 2003 Office Picture Manager, but I'm sure that wouldn't work on a new computer, or without Microsoft Office already IN the computer. At the end of this post, I AM going to add a picture from one of my pic files – one that was already cropped and lightened long ago.
Cheryl and I are in contact about the Florida ferals. She has one guy picked out for me. He is, in fact, one of the VERY cats I took a picture of when we were there last May. How great is that! (I'm going to put that picture here along with the picture I took of him last May. Cheryl has named him Quinn.) She is searching for youngsters now in case there are a couple more I can take into my cathouse. I am waiting and hoping to hear from Your Daily Cute about a possible way to get the Florida ferals from Cheryl to me. Keep your fingers crossed.
Next. Sorry I sound like a broken record concerning the Florida ferals and the BIG Transport West for Hershey Bear and Frosting. But now that I can grab pictures from emails, let me post the map that Dorian from Your Daily Cute sent me. If you are willing to share this I would be so grateful. As you can see, there are lots of contacts Midwest east. Those transport contacts get VERY slim as you go west. If you are somewhere on this route and would be willing to volunteer to help get Hershey and Frosting to their forever home, PLEASE let me know. My email address is above.
There are still so many stories to catch you up on. Of course, if you know me at all, you know that I HAVE to focus on the most pressing issues - RESCUE and ADOPTION. There are cats to rescue in Florida, and two Winnie's Wishers to get to Los Angeles. Keep your fingers crossed!
I just lost my whole post and here I am back again. Do you know anyone who works for the rail road? Sometimes a train will take animals or they used to- I do know trains run almost every where out west and I have taken them from cairo or Carbondale all the way to Flagstaff Az. The conductors were very nice. I have been all the way across the country to California on a train. Some times they will do it free for a rescue service. Of course they might have changed on that in the last 10 years. If the last leg of the trip could put them on a train and get them on out there.. Just a thought - So glad of your e-mail address. lost everything on this computer and like you said. They want you to buy the whole package and some times if won't work on a new computer. lost all my stuff,. can't get it back - Quinn is a beautiful cat and I DO HOPE YOU CAN GET HIM UP HERE ALONG WITH A COUPLE OF HIS BUDDIES KITTENS FROM THE COLONY.... have a good day at the kennel - Ginny & The Fur Family -I wish I knew more about computers...

Chrystal, I use a free program called IRFANView for my photo needs. There is a learning curve, but it does everything I need it to do. Leaving this morning for Springfield, Mo then on to OKC. Sorry it didn't work out for the transport. Chin up!

Chrystal like you I store my pictures on my computer but I also back them up to an external hard drive occasionally. You can get one at the costco for less than 100.00, it is very small (hardly bigger than my iPhone)and easy to use. Just plug it into your computer and drag the files over...done...pics saved to secondary location and safe. I've included a link if you want to check it out, just an idea :-)

Check eBay for a slightly older version of Office (say 2010+) which should work on your new computer and be cost effective. Just make sure that it's sealed. If you have any questions or need help looking let me know, I'm the Queen of eBay!! That's how I got my Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and other programs for under $50 each.

To second Kate, we use Irfan for most of our image viewing and tweaking, although cropping and an occasional color correction are about as fancy as we get. If you want something extra fancy, GIMP might be worth a check. Both are free, as far as I know. Search for "free picture editing" or something similar and you should have several options to consider.

PS: Check out Open Office. It was intended as a free competitor to Microsoft Office. Last time I cared, there were a couple branches splintering off of the main branch, so you might have to check around a little to find what you need. Not sure there is any kind of image massage available, bit there are Word and Powerpoint equivalents.

to third Kate, I too use Irfan..
I would also suggest open office.. openoffice.org which is also free.. (LOL.. I see I'm also not the first to suggest that)

Perhaps I missed something so please forgive me if this has already been discussed somewhere. Sounded there was transport to OKC, and the "Slimmer" folks would be able to pick up the two kitties at OKC and hold them for a few days while more transportation was arranged, correct?
Are there rescue transports that could take the kitties to main stopping points along your mapped route?
Has the cost been checked to fly the kitties? And even if it's high, could there be a "fundraiser", or even just a donation of $25 per follower to help pay for the babies to get to their new family?

Have you thought about using Google Drive? I am slowly switching and like it. We have not used any purchased SW for years.
Maybe try Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/
Finally for photos and cropping http://www.irfanview.com/
Hope that helps a bit. I switched to the above after the second or third time I had to reinstall things and found I had to repurchase. Yuck
