I live in the Midwest. I have no idea what the rest of the country is dealing with in terms of pests at this time of year. But here in southern Illinois (and the surrounding area), Spring is tick season and Fall is flea season. Ticks continue throughout the Summer of course, but they definitely start winding down in late August. Then just about the time the ticks become less of a problem, the fleas take over. August gets us rolling, and fleas are THE problem until the first hard freeze.
I have lots and lots of animals. To know that fleas are a problem and that you must be diligent with your flea prevention is one thing. To actually HAVE fleas on your animals is maddening. Without naming products, I am here to say that this year NOTHING has worked. In all of the years past, I could ALWAYS find a product that killed the fleas on my animals and/or kept them away. I would see the occasional flea, but I knew a treated animal was a safe animal, and I lived happily in the knowledge that any flea I caught sight of would soon be dead. NOT THIS YEAR.
I have spoken to EVERY vet at my clinic about this. I keep saying – The products that used to work aren't working. What are you suggesting this year? What's new? The answer I'm getting back is that EVERYONE is asking the same questions. Apparently, the products currently on the market are simply no longer working like they always have. The best anyone can offer in explanation is that the fleas are mutating in a way as to be immune to the products currently on the market.
Every conversation at my kennel when one of my boarders drops off begins with this – Chrystal, before we do anything else, WHAT are you using for fleas this year? We've tried everything and we don't know what to do. And I tell them I am in the same predicament.
I hate to see Summer go and Fall lead us into Winter. But I will gladly bid farewell to the fleas!! If any of you know of some amazing product or method that eliminates fleas, please let me know. I'd like to keep blogging, but I might lose my mind and end up in a corner somewhere rocking myself and mumbling about the flea-free world I once did inhabit.
Before I close, let me share something with you. A couple of weeks ago, I finally (after much encouragement), obtained an Amazon Wish List for Winnie's Wish. I announced it on the blog, and last week while I was taking a short break from blogging, some Wishes were granted. The first package the kitties received was from KR.
(I STILL have no email. Please continue to bear with me. We had unique problems with our particular email program, followed by our internet provider having problems with its own email system. Yeesh.)
See you tomorrow.
